Do these have any fruit, flowers or dropping? And can they be trimmed narrowly? Like a narrow tall hedge? Maybe 20ft or taller?
All varieties of Podocarpus can easily be trimmed as a tall narrow hedge.
To go to 20 ft, the Podocarpus gracilior is the fastest. It will grow as a tree or very tall screen.
You can use hedge trimmers on them if you want the sheared look. But, many of our clients like to hand clip the slower growing varieties to to give them a softer look. These shrubs are often used in gardens that want an Asian theme. Their personalities add much to the garden.
Older female trees can drop fruit if a male tree is nearby. Most of the trees I see in the landscape, do not have fruit.
i have another variety of maki. Leaves are smaller and colored grayish blue. What is it exactly called.
Hi zenaida,
I like the gray leafed Podocarpus for that wonderful contrasting foliage color. It looks particularly nice if it is a backdrop for plants with soft rich green foliage.
You may have Podocarpus elongatus ‘Monmal’, Icee Blue Yellow-Wood a variety from Monrovia Nursery.
I’m from mexico and I would like to know where can I buy this podocarpus In Mexico or in the USA.

Hello, I would like to plant the Icee Blue Yellow Wood Podocorpa Elongates
along my fence line and neighbor for a tell screen. The problem being,
my neighbor have horses that eat every thing and I don’t know if the Podocorpa is poison to them.
I don’t want to put anything that would make them sick or even worse poison them. I haven’t found info on this.
Thank You,
Paulette
Paulette, The Podocarpus elongatus ‘Monmal’ ‘Icee Blue Yellow-Wood’ is not known to be poisonous.
Wikipedia does state that “The red, purple or bluish fleshy fruit of most species of Podocarpus are edible, raw or cooked into jams or pies, and they have a mucilaginous texture with a slightly sweet flavor. However, the fruit are slightly toxic and should therefore be eaten sparingly, especially when eaten raw.”
“Some species of Podocarpus are used traditionally in their native areas for the treatment of fevers, asthma, coughs, cholera, chest complaints, arthritis, rheumatism, venereal diseases and distemper in dogs.[2]”
Thank You Rainbow2 Now that we have some info on Podocarpus.
I will let our neighbor know. This way he can let me know if this plant will be ok or not for our fence line. Again, Thank You.
Paulette
