We are Moving, Building a New Website and Name Change.

Our new web site is on the way while we are trying to set up our new store location. I thank all of our friends, clients and vendors for their patience while we move forward.

Neighborhood Nursery is undergoing a name change from it previously being Las Tunas Nursery. We decided on an easier name for newcomers to remember us since we are no longer on Las Tunas Dr. Our number has also changed. Our new, temporary, number is 626-872-4537 and ask for the nursery or the landscaping division.

Suddenly losing our lease for the nursery at 1155 E Las Tunas after 15 years in business was a shock to us. We want to stay in the San Gabriel Valley to support all those who helped us grow from an undeveloped piece of land under the Edison Right of Way, to the thriving business we built.

We are searching out properties in Pasadena at this time.

Thank you for your continued support.
Frank

Our Landscape Photos and Ideas

Neighborhood Nursery provides Landscape and Design all across the United States, but specializes in low maintenance, low water use plantings in Southern California.

Morgan Ranch Project
Enjoy as the water from the top of the stream makes its way into the crystal clear pond. This is just one of the beautiful waterfalls we have built. We used natural stone, some over 6000 lbs apiece. The pond is 4 feet deep and you can see a dime on the bottom all year long. We build our own biological filters that prevent algae bloom.
The pond is built to deter herons and raccoons, but diving birds have been a problem. The homeowner effectively strung white cord across the pond so the birds do not attempt to catch the fish.
The pond is stocked with small koi and goldfish and is made of EPDM liner under the natural stone.

Cumberland Project
Watch the plants mature before your very eyes. Before and after pictures as well as pics of the plants months after installation. We supplied all the materials as well as the design and installation of this beautiful front yard. Colorful, but low water use plants, micro spray irrigation, MP Rotator lawn heads, everything that could be done to save water and have an incredibly low maintenance yard.

Note how we use ground covers extensively in the foreground with larger plants to the rear, giving visual depth to the yard.

Hermosa Project
Here is a great project where we did the design and hardscape. The hardscape masonry including the installation of the retaining walls, patio, stepping stones and stairs. We also supplied the materials and installed the lawn and low water use plantings. Low volume micro spray irrigation is used extensively.

We used vibrant colors against bright white walls. All of the plant materials are Mediterranean or desert climates.

Stoner Drive

This is a really fun project that started with modifying a common rear patio that was just a rectangle built against the back wall and removal of large tree stumps that were causing damage to the property. The patio was partitioned into three areas. BBQ outside the kitchen, dining area and fire pit seating area. The pondless waterfall is the focal point of this yard.

The front removed all lawn that was replaced with low maintenance shrubs and ground covers.

 Claudia Japanese Style Garden

Minimize lawn, less maintenance, tranquility- this is everything you notice when sitting in this rear yard.

Our client is an important part of keeping this garden neat. “Working in my garden gives me peace” is something he has told us many times.

Apperson Patio Cover

This may seem like a common patio cover, but it is so much more. The structure is built above the roof line to give airiness to the patio. An old deck and concrete walkway were removed and replaced with the Mexican saltillo pavers. It is now a very comfortable dining area and allows the family to enjoy the rear yard out of the hot sun.

Fruit Trees

Proper fruit tree selection can  provide backyard fruit growers with incredible tasting fruit.  With the proper care, your fruit trees will produce as well as those grown in professionally managed orchards. Our fruit tree species are continually being developed and improved over many years to offer both a quality appearance and delicious tasting fruits.

Our fruit trees produce fruit for cooking, baking, or just to enjoy fresh off of the tree. A large majority of people will attest to the superior taste of tree-ripened fruit than fruit purchased at a grocery store. By planting and growing one or more of your own fruit trees, you can experience the same.

As well as nutritious and delicious fruit, many of our trees provide some of the most spectacular springtime flowering exhibitions in the plant world. Flowering apple and cherry trees will provide visual enjoyment to be remembered for years.

See our extensive selection of fruit trees and feel free to contact us for any questions you may have.

About Us

What We Do

Neighborhood Nursery is a new business idea servicing everyone from the home gardener to the professional landscaper. We offer a full line of professional gardening supplies at exceptional prices. Neighborhood Nursery is a distributor of Plants, Pond Supplies, Irrigation Supplies, Outdoor Lighting Supplies and much more. Just about anything to care for and enjoy the outdoors.

It is important to understand that Neighborhood Nursery runs its internet operations independent of any retail store. With every order, we arrange a pick up time or we ship your items directly to you, eliminating the extra expense necessary to care of items in the retail nursery.

So how do we do offer such great pricing? By pulling plants from the growing yards and landscape material directly from the warehouse and putting them directly into your hands, we save the extra time and labor it takes to handle them in the retail yard.

Many people do not realize how much work it takes to operate a retail nursery. It is one of the highest overhead businesses you can imagine. The care of living plants is 7 days a week, requiring watering, feeding and moving the plants around. Plants can not sit on a shelf waiting to be purchased. They are living, breathing things that need care and attention, and these costs really add up.

While we are searching for our new location, Neighborhood Nursery is working with Present Perfect Nursery in Pasadena.

Note: If you have an order with Neighborhood Nursery and you see something additional in the retail store, nursery prices will be charged for the add on items.

History
Neighborhood Nursery is the offspring of Las Tunas Nursery and The Rainbow Gardens, a retail plant nursery and award winning landscape construction company with over 20 years of experience. Started by Frank Tremmel, the companies combined services include retail and wholesale plant sales, landscape and irrigation installation and landscape design. We are also experienced in pond supplies and installation, low voltage lighting, and hardscapes.

Profiles
Frank began his career in horticulture when he began mowing grass for his parents neighbors. The handles of the lawnmower were still over his head for that first year. Since that time he remained an avid learner and is active in gaining gardening information for plants, easy maintenance techniques and dispelling old gardening myths. Frank is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University college of Agriculture with a degree in Animal Science. Studies included agronomy, plant science, and business management. He is licensed as both a nurseryman and landscape contractor. He holds Certified Landscape Technician (CLT) certificates in Landscape Maintenance and Irrigation, one of the few individuals in the country to hold two certifications. He also is a certified water auditor. Frank is the recipient of the Ben Slade Memorial Award from the California State Contractors Association. This is the highest honor available representing the best maintenance project in California.

While working in Research and Development for the CIBA-Geigy Corporation, now Novartus, Frank led classes for Agricultural Extension offices. Topics included disease and insect control in farm crops and livestock while minimizing impact to the environment. His experience in weed control in agricultural and ornamental crops began in this area. In depth analysis of fertilization programs and water management were, and still are, a vital part of the plant health programs.

Frank has also done several manufacturer testimonials. Companies such as Gravely and Pond Supplies have used his experience using their equipment to show quality and affordability in proper equipment use. Combine his lifetime of experience in maintaining beautiful commercial and residential properties, his education and his construction experience in Southern California, you get a design/builder with creativity, efficiency and attention to detail.

Purpose of this Blog
Our posts here are for the purpose of alerting clients in Southern California, and similar climates, of things we encounter while working in their yards. This includes proper watering, pests we find and their control, timing fertilization and weed control, etc.
