Which Pordocarpus is used as a tall privacy narrow hedge with NO droppings, flower fruit or other? We want tall privacy somewhat dense and narrow. Please help
Krissy, All the podocarpus varieties make a nice privacy hedge.
If you want fast growing, Podocarpus gracilior is very good. It is fast growing, can be grown as a hedge or a tree, is dense and does not have root invasion problems in small areas.
Podocarpus macrophylla varieties are more columnar, therefore, do not require as much trimming. They are slower growing too. Maintenance wise, the macrophylla varieties are less work.
Podocarpus henkelii is both relatively fast growing and is more pyramidal in shape. Therefore, it grows more like a screen than a tree and is faster than the macrophylla’s.
Podocarpus gracilior is also pest free, while macrophylla and macrophylla maki do get some aphids.
All will drop leaves, but I find them to be very clean versus trees / shrubs that have larger leaves.
All have a fruit that is small and hard so it falls straight to the ground. I do not find this to be messy.
Overall I find the Podocarpus macrophylla maki the least work, followed by Podocarpus macrophylla, Podocarpus henkelii and then Podocarpus gracilior.
